£100m for roads, promises Government

LAUNCHED: Major Road Network consultation...

Roads across the country could benefit from up to £100 million in funding as the Government releases a consultation on the Major Road Network (MRN)…but, what does this mean for drivers? Vanarama's Laura Day reports.

The MRN consultation identifies that 5,000 miles of A road – amounting to more than 20 times the length of the UK's longest motorway – are in for possible upgrades and improvements with new funding from the National Roads Fund.

Here are the proposals…

From the proposals, the upgrade schemes under consideration are:

  • Bypasses
  • Road widening
  • Major junction improvements
  • Missing links between existing routes
  • Better use of technological and safety enhancements along stretches of the network

Road upgrades will be developed by councils and other bodies – ensuring they will be designed accordingly by the areas to deliver the best solutions for their roads.

The experts have their say

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling highlights: "For decades, these major local roads have been underfunded and not properly maintained."

Investing in our roads "will unlock no end of benefits for communities by improving motorists' journeys, taking traffic away from built up areas, as well as enabling new housing to be built and creating jobs."

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) were also pleased with the announcement, particularly RHA chief executive Richard Burnett who identifies that, "the prospect of investment in the transport network to improve the flow of goods and services we all rely on is good news".

What does the future hold?

The Government's proposed investment, given the lack of funding available in recent years for councils to improve driving conditions, means that we are one step closer to a smoother and more efficient road network.

And, isn't that EXACTLY what we all want?
