£150m worth of London motoring fines could be illegal

Van leasing customers in London could find fines issued to them in the last three years were done so illegally.

According to BBC London, a successful legal battle by a driver in the capital has left the door open for millions of similar cases.

The news provider reports that, in 2009, motorist Zeesham Sheikh challenged a ticket issued by Waltham Forest Council for failing to comply with a sign prohibiting taking a turn in a certain direction.

However, due to a problem with the wording on the ticket meant the fine could not be enforced.

It is estimated as many as1.5 million motorists have been issued similar tickets and could be in line for payouts totalling £150 million.

"Millions of pounds of London penalty charge notices are illegal," said parking campaigner Barrie Segal, who helped bring the issue to light.

"TfL (Transport for London) and other local authorities will have to cancel all outstanding tickets issued and refund millions of pounds illegally claimed."

New transport secretary Philip Hammond recently promised to "end the war on motorists" by relaxing traffic laws.
