A site for sore eyes! Get a website that wows your business and your customers

Get a website that WOWS your business

Every professional tradesperson needs a decent website because savvy customers are using the Internet to research your business before they pick up the phone or send an email. So if your current website is looking tired and it was created by your best mate several years ago it might not be giving the right impression of your business.

Here's how to improve it or if it's beyond repair to build a brand-new website.

Have the right pages on your website

  • Create an 'About Us' page that includes information about your business such as how long you've been established, your values and your customer service standards. Consider adding some professionally taken photographs of your team and a brief description of what they do in your business. Include any awards or accreditations you've gained. Show off those logos!
  • Include an FAQ page. Cover genuine questions asked by potential customers when they contact you and add new ones as they arise. This is a great way of providing useful information about what you offer minus the hard sell.
  • Include a Services page. This should include details of the type of work carried out by your business, the three main benefits of each service and how customers can find out more information. Are there useful fact sheets they can download?
  • Have your contact details on each page. Add an easy to complete contact form plus details of where you're based. Grab potential customers surfing the web out of hours that want to make contact there and then.
  • Google loves video! Can you include a friendly video greeting web visitors and letting them know what's in store if they contact you?

And make sure your website is mobile and tablet friendly!

Make your site user friendly

Use your business colours bur avoid crazy fonts and capital letters. Steer clear of an overload of background images that make the text hard to read. Too many flashing images can be off putting. Clean and simple are great principles to stick to.

Make your text easy to read and interesting

Page after page of dull text won't captivate anyone. If the written word isn't your strength, employ a copywriter.  Agree a fixed fee so there are no shocks when you're presented with the bill. A word of caution, if you don't thoroughly brief the copywriter about your business and let them know about your strengths, services and capabilities, you can't complain when you're presented with text that doesn't bear any resemblance to your business.

Don't do DIY!

It definitely pays to use a web designer to create your website instead of your next door neighbour because nothing is more off putting to a visitor than a home-made looking website. It gives a negative impression that won't bring customers flocking to your door. Ask your web designer to include a content management system (CMS) so that you can make changes to the content but not the overall design. Before signing on the dotted line look at the websites they've created and spend time talking through your business and what you're looking for.
