AA claims public against scrapping speed cameras

Van contract hire drivers may be divided in their opinion on speed cameras but the AA has claimed that in general, the public support their use.

The motoring organisation says that most people accept that the devices help save lives, and that this is more important than the risk of being caught speeding.

It follows the recent news that several local authorities are having to switch off cameras as they can no longer afford to keep them running following government cutbacks.

But the AA says its polls consistently reveal that around 70 per cent of its members accept their use.

"There is currently a road safety policy void which could lead to an increase in crashes. Locally, decisions are being made based on harsh financial reality, coupled with perceptions of what the Government's longer term intentions might be," said AA president Edmund King.

"Cameras will never be loved but their use is accepted by the majority of motorists."

The government cut central funding for speed cameras and reduced the road safety budget by £38 million.
