Auto industry leaders meet to discuss sector's future

Europe's automotive industry leaders are meeting in London to discuss the most-pressing issues facing the sector right now.

With developments likely to be of interest to both van contract hire customers and providers, the second International Automotive Summit held by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) will focus on how best to step up investment in low-carbon technology.

According to the secretary of state for business, Vince Cable, low-carbon cars and vans offer significant opportunities for business growth across the UK, with the government set to do more to encourage manufacturers to produce cleaner and more-sustainable vehicles over the next few years.

"We want to give the automotive industry a stable business environment to capitalise on further opportunities and we will do this by creating a more supportive tax environment, freeing up credit through the banking system, reducing regulation and focusing on training and apprenticeships," Dr Cable told delegates attending the London event.

At the same time, the SMMT has also used the opportunity of its summit to launch its new Ultra Low Carbon Truck strategy.
