Black cars most likely to be involved in accidents

Van contract hire customers may want to keep an eye out for black cars in order to avoid accidents.

A new study has found that black cars are up to 47 per cent more likely to be involved in crashes, the Daily Mail reports.

Researchers at Monash University in Australia looked at police data on 850,000 accidents over a 20-year period.

They discovered that certain colours of vehicle are more likely to crash than others, something they put down to how easy the colour is to see for other motorists.

Black, grey, silver, red and blue vehicles were involved in the most accidents as they blend in most with surrounding scenery.

Meanwhile, white, gold and yellow cars were found to be the safest.

Dr Stuart Newstead told the news provider: "Whilst campaigns to modify vehicle colour choice could alter the crash risk for the fleet, colour is a much less influential crash risk modifier than behavioural traits such as drink-driving, and speeding."

Road accidents in Great Britain claim around 3,000 lives each year.
