Campaign group condemns road improvement plans

Many van contract hire customers may welcome any improvements to Britain's road system.

However, one group has argued that politicians should reject calls from groups such as the British Chambers of Commerce to invest public funds on new roads.

The Campaign for Better Transport claims that the money would be more wisely spent on small-scale "smart travel measures" such as cycling improvements and travel plans for schools and workplaces.

Its argument follows a report by the Sustainable Travel Town demonstration project which studied the affects of transport initiatives in UK towns.

Richard George, roads and climate campaigner of Campaign for Better Transport said: "As the British Chambers of Commerce calls for unaffordable and destructive roads, new evidence shows that smart local transport measures can tackle traffic problems now.

"We want the next government to invest in just this type of sustainable transport, not massive road projects that lead to bigger, wider traffic jams"

The RAC recently criticised the mayor of London's traffic plans as they focussed too heavily on public transport and did nothing to help van and car drivers.
