Campaign group 'outraged' over road safety funding cuts

Van leasing customers have been warned that government cuts to spending on road safety could lead to more accidents.

Campaign group Brake has blasted the government's announcement, made as part of yesterday's emergency Budget, that transport funding is likely to be cut by more than 25 per cent by 2014.

These cutbacks include an immediate reduction of £17.2 million from the specific road safety capital grant and a £20.6 million cut in the road safety component of revenue area based grant.

According to Brake, this will lead to a higher number of casualties on the roads and further stretch emergency services.

Ellen Booth, campaigns officer for Brake, said: "Brake is outraged that road safety has been targeted so brutally.

"By targeting road safety, the government has shown they have no concern for the families of the future carnage we may see because of this irresponsible and short sighted cut of a vital life-saving service."

The government has also decided as part of the Budget not to repeal Labour's rise in fuel duty.
