Congestion charge increase announced but western extension scrapped

Van leasing customers face having to pay an additional £2 to drive in the London congestion charge zone.

Mayor Boris Johnson has announced that drivers will be charged £10 per day to drive in central London during charging hours from January 2011.

However, there was some good news for motorists as the western extension of the congestion charge area will be scrapped by Christmas Eve this year, the mayor said.

After this the charging area will revert to approximately the same dimensions as those that existed before the extension was brought in 2007.

"West London never wanted the western extension," Mr Johnson said.

"It is right that residents there can now tell us whether this Christmas should see the end of it."

A public consultation period for Mr Johnson's plans will now take place and will run until the end of August.

The London congestion charge was introduced by Mr Johnson's predecessor Ken Livingstone and has been in affect since February 17th 2003.
