Electric van sales expected to increase after the election

Cheap van leasing customers may be interested to learn that sales of electric vans are expected to increase markedly once the new government is formed.

This is the suggestion of Kevin Harkin, sales director at Smith Electric Vehicles, the company that converts Ford Transit and Transit Connect into the Edison and Ampere electric models, FleetNews reports.

Mr Harkin told delegates at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham earlier this month that new environmental legislation is almost certain to be passed by the next government, which will see the creation of new low-emission areas and exclusion zones.

"All this will prompt more and more van fleets to look at electric vehicles," the news provider quoted him as saying.

Sales at Smith Electric Vehicles are buoyant and the vehicle manufacturer believes they will continue to rise to record levels.

The company announced this week that its new 17-seat minibus had been available in the UK. The model, which is based on the chassis of the Ford Transit van, has a range of 80 miles and a top speed of 50mph.
