A new series of testing is to be rolled out by Nissan at its Japanese plant in order to assess electric vehicles.
The prototype will be based on the compact commercial Nissan NV200, which was recently chosen as the next generation New York taxi.
Currently available in Japan and Europe, the model is said to be suited to a wide variety of situations including business, leisure or daily use.
For the first phase of testing, the new electric vehicle will be used to carry out postal collection and delivery tasks for two months in the city of Yokohama.
Nissan Corporate vice-president Hideto Murakami said: "I expect that our commercial electric vehicles based on the NV200 will contribute to our customers' business and to the development of a sustainable society."
The Japan Post Service, which was established in October 2007, will conduct the testing and provide customer feedback on the handling and reliability of the vehicle.
