The firm that constructs the Ford Transit Connect Electric for Ford in Europe has closed its European operation, and has filed for bankruptcy protection in Canada, where the firms' head offices are based.
Gary Whittam, sales and marketing director of Azure's operations in Europe no longer has a role as the company has confirmed the closure of its plants.
Vice - president of Azure said they had built 500 Ford Transit Connect Electrics and just over half of these vehicles were sold in America. The remaining vehicles have remained unsold and this prompted the Azure management team to close down its European operations.
Ford said a very small number of the Ford Transit Connect Electric had been sold in the UK. The Ford Transit Connect Electric retails at just under £40k.
Currently Ford is working out how to service those customers who have bought a Ford Transit Connect Electric in the UK.
The vice - president of Azure responded to the question will there be a future for Azure in Europe: "There is a future for Azure, we're not sure where but there is a future for Azure and hopefully that will be in Europe."
The Department of Transport have confirmed the plug - in grant will still be available for the Ford Transit Connect Electric which knocks £8000 off the asking price.
A spokeswoman said: "It doesn't affect the scheme. There's no set number of vans that have to be eligible. More will be added on as they come to market."
