FTA calls for Severn Bridge toll freeze

Van leasing customers could benefit from new calls to freeze toll price increases on the Severn Bridge.
The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has written to the Welsh Affairs Committee arguing that "unchecked" successive price increases on the crossing are damaging UK businesses.
Ian Gallagher, the FTA's policy manager for Wales and the South West, said: "It is absolutely ludicrous that businesses still trying to recover from the worst recession in recent history are being held to ransom by gratuitous and cynical price hikes across what is an essential trade corridor connecting England with south Wales.
"Some of our members spend many thousands of pounds on these tolls every month - it is simply unsustainable."
It has also called for a more flexible pricing structure to be implemented that, for example, would see a reduced rate for off-peak travel for commercial vehicles.
The current standard toll charge for a goods vehicle up to 3,500kg is £10.90.
