IAM calls on drivers to improve skills to match modern road conditions

Van leasing customers and other road users should seek to continually improve there driving skills, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has said.
This is because modern road conditions are more complicated and potentially dangerous, the organisation claims.
"There are more cars on the road than ever before, and the driving environment is becoming more complicated. Our driving tests, however, have changed little over the years, and an improvement in driving standards is needed to fill the gap," said Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner.
"Traffic has significantly increased and traffic networks have become immensely more complex."
In addition, the IAM has appealed for a rural road element to be introduced to British driving tests.
It points out that, in the UK, 71 per cent of road deaths occur on rural roads.
Earlier this week, the IAM warned that this time of year makes driving on country roads particularly dangerous because of the long crass and abundance of wildlife that can stray into vehicles' paths.
