London is Europe's fourth most congested city

Van contract hire drivers may be surprised to learn that London is not Europe's most congested city.

According to a new study, that dubious honour falls to the Belgian capital, with drivers there encountering delays on 37.7 per cent of its main roads each day.

London did finish fairly high up the table in fourth place, however, the study by sat nav maker TomTom revealed.

A further six British cities made it on to the list of 59, including two more in the top ten - Edinburgh in fifth place and Belfast in seventh.

The outcome of the study may suggest that more is needed to be done to tackle traffic problems in the country, despite the use of congestion charging in the English capital.

In a recent report, the Transport Committee advocated a greater use of variable speed limits and the integration of different forms of transport to help better regulate traffic flow.
