M25 named Britain's worst place to take a break

Van contract hirers should avoid taking driving breaks while on the M25, it has been suggested.

A new survey by the RAC has revealed that the London orbital motorway (specifically between junctions 6-11) is the worse road in the country to stop for a rest.

Motorists identified several factors as making a road good or bad in terms of a place to take a break from driving.

Some 95 per cent said good quality toilets were important, followed by cleanliness (84 per cent), tables and seating (48 per cent), picturesque scenery (35 per cent), and a children's play area (30 per cent).

But the 4000 RAC members polled identified lack of rest stops the main problem with the M25.

RAC spokesman Erik Nelson said: "Motorists are currently held to ransom by pricey roadside stops on motorways or grim, narrow lay-by provision on smaller roads. It's vital that motorists have regular breaks and these need to be taken in safe, clean and convenient stops."

The 117 mile-long M25 was completed in 1986.
