Van contract hire drivers in the future may get the option of selecting an electric van from Mercedes.
The manufacturer has released details of its new Vito E-CELL battery-powered van, which first went into production earlier this year.
Mercedes claims the van is ideally suited to inner-city operations and for particularly environmentally sensitive areas as it operates with no emissions and almost silently.
As well as its green credentials, the van offers impressive performance for an electric vehicle.
With an operating range of around 130 km, the Vito E-CELL is easily capable of meeting the average van drivers' daily mileage requirements of 50-80km.
The van is capable of carrying a payload up to 900kg and is limited to a top speed of 80mph.
Mercedes-Benz has begun building a small series of 100 vans to be completed this autumn and is scheduled to deliver another 2,000 from 2011.
It was announced today that the government has decided to approve a scheme to offer grants of up to £5,000 to those buying an electric car.
