Motorist challenges speed camera reliability

Hundreds of van leasing customers may be able to challenge speeding tickets should a motorist be successful in challenging the reliability of speed cameras.
Andrew Fowler, a 48-year-old electrical engineer, claims that a Gatso speed camera that caught him speeding was rendered faulty by freezing weather.
Mr Fowler is taking his case to the crown court after he was flashed going 41mph in a 30mph in February last year.
However, he is convinced the camera made a mistake and, after investigating the matter, found that they are only tested for accuracy in temperatures as low as zero degrees centigrade.
The temperature was minus five when Mr Fowler was caught, and this, he says can lead the camera into recording a faster speed than actually occurred.
If successful, it could lead to thousands of motorists contesting speeding fines.
''If I'm successful everyone will be at their crown court with speeding cases. Everyone will be able to appeal," Mr Fowler said.
The new government recently announced that it will not directly fund any new fixed-position speed cameras.
