Motorists 'clueless' about cutting costs

Van contract hire drivers could be among motorists branded clueless when it comes to cutting costs.

A survey by breakdown company Autonational Rescue has found that many drivers are unaware about some of the money saving driving habits they can adopt.

Some 93 per cent admit they have never considered filling up with petrol more often to prevent driving around with a heavy tank.

Meanwhile, just seven per cent look for the cheapest petrol station when filling up and only a fifth look for shortcuts to cut down on journey distances.

The survey of 1,000 motorists also found that just 15 per cent think about using supermarket fuel vouchers to cut costs and checking tyre prices was considered to be vital by only 34 per cent.

Autonational Rescue marketing manager Ronan Hart said: "There are good ways to save on motoring costs and when it comes to tyres, making sure you have the right pressures is very important.

"Planning a shorter journey is of course essential and could knock a lot off fuel bills."
A recent poll carried out by YouGov on behalf of Ford found that 93 per cent of UK motorists see rising fuel prices as a major concern.
