Motorists find speed signs insufficient

Van contract hire drivers could get caught speeding because of inadequate road signage, it has been suggested.
A new survey by RoadPilot, which provides speed camera data to GPS companies, 52 per cent of motorists feel that there is insufficient signage to notify them of local speed limits.
The news comes shortly after the government announced it would review its policy on road signs in an effort to encourage councils to cut down on "street clutter".
It was also found by the poll that 53 per cent of drivers said that looking out for speed cameras distracted their attention from watching the road ahead.
James Flynn, chief executive of RoadPilot, said: "While the removal of distracting street clutter is laudable, this initiative should not come at the expense of driver safety.
"Speed detection equipment and speed restricted areas without proper and clear warnings could, in fact, be detrimental to road safety if motorists take last-minute emergency manoeuvres on seeing a speed camera."
Many councils are having to consider scrapping their speed camera programmes as a result of government cuts.
