Motorists show support for lower speed limits

Van leasing drivers could be among those who want to see speed limits in certain areas lowered.

According to a survey by road safety group Brake and insurance provider Direct Line, 92 per cent of drivers want 20mph to be the limit around schools.

In addition, 60 per cent think motorists should be able to go no more than 20mph in residential areas and 56 per cent also want this speed limit in all areas with lots of people on foot and bicycle.

The majority of drivers (seven in ten) are also in favour of lowering the speed limit on rural roads with 42 per cent preferring a default of 50mph, and a further 28 per cent wanting 40mph.

Julie Townsend, Brake's campaigns director, said: "In recent months the debate on speed and speed enforcement has been raging, following news that some local authorities are turning off their speed cameras.

"Our research suggests that drivers do understand that slowing down saves lives - as they overwhelmingly support lower speed limits on both urban and rural roads."

According to a recent poll by RoadPilot, 66 per cent of motorists fear roads in parts of the UK will become more dangerous because of the deactivation of speed cameras.
