New dangerous driving sentencing guidelines - what are they?

The Ministry of Justice has announced that new sentencing guidelines include possible life sentences for causing death by dangerous driving, alongside a new offence of causing serious injury by careless driving. Vanarama's Tom Roberts reports.

These new sentencing guidelines will become law as soon as parliamentary time can be found for the necessary legislation.

 

What's coming?

The proposed sentences are aimed at the worst cases of dangerous driving, such as driving under the influence of drink or drugs, street racing, mobile phone use, etc. – and are intended to classify them as equivalent to manslaughter – with a maximum penalty increasing from 14 years to a life sentence.
