Nissan have announced a new electric van modelled on the Nissan NV200, entitled the Nissan e-NV200 is at a stage of "near future production" and is currently being previewed at the North American Motor Show in Detroit.
The Nissan e-NV200 is thought to be an improved version of the electric Nissan van currently being trialled by Fedex Express in London, UK.
Hideto Murakami, corporate vice - president for Nissan commented: "A potential game-changing vehicle in its segment, the battery capacity will support a driving range similar to the Nissan Leaf while payload and cargo space will offer the same level as the current NV200."
The vice - president went on to say that though the Nissan e-NV200 would predominately be targeted at commercial businesses such as fleet operators and owner drivers, there was scope for private use as well.
The Nissan e-NV200 is believed to be modelled on the Leaf electric passenger car and the Nissan NV200 commercial van.
With the announcement of the Plug-in Grant for low emission and electric vehicles, Nissan's timing could not be better.
The Renault Kangoo ZE which has earned good reviews from critics and has made a bit of an impact with sales and reviews, seems to be paving the way for a new era in commercial van design, focusing on an electric power source.
If the Nissan e-NV200 can deliver in the same vein as the Renault Kangoo ZE then a bright future for the brand could well ensue.
