French van manufacturers Peugeot have announced they will not be making a Peugeot 208 van.
Currently the Peugeot 207 van is scheduled to end its run by April of this year, and this will be the last van version of the Peugeot 207 ever to be built.
The car - van variants of Peugeot's range are now dominated by the Peugeot Blipper which has sold a high number of units year on year. The Peugeot 207 car - van which is predominately a UK van was only brought into production until the Peugeot Blipper was off the drawing board and into mainstream production.
Sales of the Peugeot 207 car - van which is modelled on the Peugeot 207 passenger car, sold 970 units in 2008, a very respectable figure. In 2009 however, only 437 units were shifted, and last year a mere 250 units were sold.
The Peugeot Blipper on the other hand was bought by 5000 van drivers and fleet mangers in the UK, completely eclipsing the Peugeot 207 in 2011.
A Peugeot spokesperson hinted that the production of car - vans demeans the Peugeot car range which the French vehicle manufacturers are trying to push up market.
The spokesman for Peugeot continued to say: "There is now no need for a 208 van. The Blipper does a good job in the upright, compact van segment."
The Peugeot Blipper is one of Peugeot's most successful commercial vehicles and will carry the small van flag for the company for some time yet.
