Individuals interested in van leasing may be surprised to hear that Plymouth has the lowest number of low-carbon vehicles.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders' (SMMT's) Motorparc 2010 research revealed that Chesterfield is leading the way with 29 per cent of cars on the road emitting lower CO2 levels.
However, Plymouth is the worst with just 19 per cent achieving an output level of 140g/km of CO2.
Meanwhile, Greater London and the north-west saw a fall in the number of registered vehicles over the last five years, despite the overall national figure increasing by 0.7 per cent from 2009 to the end of last year.
The data also revealed that silver is still the most popular car colour, although white motors have increased dramatically with a rise of seven per cent.
SMMT is the UK's primary source of statistics on the vehicle industry and allows members to form business plans and forecasting.
