RMIF calls for van MoT changes

Van leasing vehicles could be subject to more regular MoTs should calls from the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) be heeded.
The industry body has called for all Class7 vehicles (vans and chassis cabs between three and 3.5 tonnes) to undergo yearly inspections, roadtransport.com reports.
It comes in response to recently released data from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) showing the MoT failure rates of individual vehicle models.
David Grant, chairman of the federation's National Franchised Dealer Association truck committee, told the news provider: "The first-time pass rate for Class 7 vehicles has consistently worsened over the past few years, with the most recently published failure rates from VOSA being 45.6 per cent.
"The RMIF is concerned about the effect these vehicles are having on road safety."
He cited the vast difference between the average mileage of Class 7 vehicles (107,000 miles) after three years compared to cars and light commercial vehicles (60,000 miles) as one cause of the problem.
However, van drivers may be better than most at taking good care of their vehicle, with a recent survey from van insurance specialists Swinton Commercial finding they knew more about vehicle maintenance than car drivers.
