The contract hire of hydrogen-powered vans could become available if more companies follow the Royal Mail in adopting the technology.
According to fleetnews.co.uk, the organisation has purchased two Ford Transit vans fitted with eco-friendly hydrogen engines for use in Stornaway, Scotland.
Fitted by UK engineering company Revolve, the vans will take part in a six-month trial which, if successful, it hoped will lead to other fleet mangers investing in the technology.
Paul Turner, technical director at Revolve, said that their are significant obstacles to the vans being more widely adopted.
"Fleets won't buy them because there is no re-fuelling infrastructure and the garages wont create an infrastructure because there are no hydrogen vans for sale," he told the news provider.
"We have decided to stand up and do something and hopefully in the future things will improve."
The news follows the recent announcement that the German government has purchased several electric Ford Transit vans as part of a trial phase of a scheme to boost electric vehicle uptake.
