Speed camera reductions begin

Van contract hire drivers may be pleased to hear that the government's plan to reduce the number of speed cameras takes effect.

Earlier this year, the coalition government promised to "end the war on motorists".

Part of this was to cancel central government funding for local authority speed camera schemes.

As a result, councils have to choose between paying for the cameras out of their own budget or scrapping them.

It has now been revealed that Oxfordshire County Council is to switch off 72 speed cameras after funding for its road safety partnership was cut by £600,000.

Road safety minister Mike Penning welcomed the news, saying: "Local authorities have relied too heavily on safety cameras for far too long so I am pleased that some councils are now focusing on other measures to reduce road casualties. This is another example of this government delivering on its pledge to end the war on the motorist."

Recently released government figures revealed that in 2008-09 speed cameras raked in over £87 million in fines.
