Van contract hire drivers could be risking their safety due to bad driving habits, a new survey suggests.
A poll by Co-operative Insurance found that an alarming number of drivers admit to undertaking potentially dangerous activities while behind the wheel.
Some 53 per cent of respondents admitted to eating or consuming soft drinks while driving.
Furthermore, 12 per cent smoke while driving and seven per cent illegally talk on the phone.
It seems people's hectic lifestyles and time pressures are leading to a number of dangerous driving habits with 11 per cent saying they have prepared for meetings and six per cent have put on make-up or finished getting dressed.
A large number of drivers (46 per cent) admitted to speeding when running late and 43 per cent said they went too fast when in a bad mood.
Grant Mitchell, of Co-operative Insurance, said: "These alarming figures show drivers are unnecessarily increasing the chances of causing or being involved in an accident."
A recent survey by Churchill found more than one in five female drivers admit to regularly checking their appearance in the rear view mirror while three per cent of men have had a shave while driving.
