Tesco to map van speeds

Businesses that use van leasing may be interested in a new initiative by Tesco Dotcom.

The supermarket giant's online shopping division is implementing a programme to monitor the speed of its delivery van drivers, reports Fleet News.

It will use a 'contextual speeding' system which uses telematics and mapping data to monitor the speeds of its drivers at all times.

The system will trigger an alert when a driver exceeds the speed limit by ten per cent.

Tesco Dotcom will use the data initially to target drivers who are the worst speeding offenders.

Once a manageable level of instances of speeding has been reached, it will put the emphasis on store managers to control the process and take action.

"We have given drivers enough time to do their routes properly. They do not need to speed and we tell them not to," Tesco Dotcom operations director Keith Price told the news provider.

"We expect this system to bring down the number of speeding events to zero - or a minimal level - by the end of January."

Tesco is the world's largest online grocery retailer.
