Transport Committee to reopen insurance inquiry

The Transport Committee is to reopen an inquiry into insurance costs for drivers of road vehicles such as VW Transporter vans, in the light of rising premiums for motorists.

It is to convene at a meeting scheduled to take place in the autumn and has called Jack Straw - who has published a paper investigating the increasing cost of insuring a vehicle - as a witness.

Chair of the committee Louise Ellman described the former lord chancellor's research into the issue as "a powerful contribution" to the ongoing debate on insurance costs.

"As hearing what he has to say I will want to hold the insurance industry and the government to account," she remarked, adding motorists "continue to suffer" as a result of escalating prices.

The move may be welcomed by Jay Parmar, legal and policy director at the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association, who recently criticised the Continuous Insurance Enforcement legislation that is currently in place.

It has been introduced to clamp down on uninsured drivers, but Mr Parmar argued it is "creating bureaucracy" for members of his organisation.
