Companies that lease Citroen Relay Enterprise vans in order to transport goods may be interested to hear about the results of a new trial.
The Quiet Delivery Demonstration Scheme (QDDS) initiative saw six trials take place at retail outlets across England in 2010, the Freight Transport Association reports.
It was found that introducing a consistent methodology, which included installing noise monitoring equipment, launching a driver charter and a site assessment for noise, helped reduce the number of complaints from nearby residents.
Transport Minister Mike Penning said: "This shows that by following proven methodology shop owners and supermarkets can receive deliveries out-of-hours without being a nuisance to residents."
It is hoped that the results of the trials will lead to a wider acceptance of night-time deliveries, which will help reduce traffic congestion, while still allowing people to achieve a good night's sleep.
Mr Penning added that the report should prove insightful for the both the retail sector and local authorities who are keen to relax curfew regulations.
