A new study suggests van contract hire users could be among the country's most vehicle-savvy motorists.
According to a survey by van insurance specialists Swinton Commercial, van drivers no more about essential vehicle maintenance than those who drive cars.
The poll found that 81 per cent of van drivers new the correct tyre pressure for their vehicle, compared to just 20 per cent of car drivers
Furthermore, 97 per cent know how to change a tyre where as only 76 per cent of car drivers are able to do so.
Phil Moss, commercial vehicle manager at Swinton, said: "All drivers should have at least basic knowledge of their vehicles and should not rely on other people to carry out maintenance work, such as filling up tyres and topping up oil, to avoid unnecessary claims which can lead to an increase in insurance premiums."
According to Lee Grandin, managing director of Van Insurance Limited, keeping a vehicle well-maintained is one of the most effective ways van drivers can keep running costs down.
