Van contract hire drivers could be charged to park at work under cash-generating schemes being considered by local councils.
That is according to the Daily Telegraph, which claims a number of local authorities are considering the measure as a way to bolster the finances following government funding cuts.
The councils considering the scheme include those in Bristol, York, Devon, Hampshire, Leeds, Bournemouth, South Somerset and Wiltshire.
Nottingham City Council has already made plans to introduce such a scheme and will implement a £250 levy on those who drive to work.
However, within two years, this will rise to £350 and will target all companies with 11 or more parking spaces.
Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, told the news provider: "Councils have had the power to impose workplace parking levies for a decade now.
"There will be a lot of raised eyebrows amongst the nation's 34 million motorists that now, after ten years when no local authority introduced the scheme, so many are considering introducing the levy in the middle of a financial crisis."
Many councils have recently had to consider switching off speed cameras due to a lack of funds.
