Van contract hire drivers worried about economic future

A survey has revealed that many van contract hire drivers may be concerned about their financial security.

According to a poll by insurance firm More Than, three out of four van drivers who run their own business fear going bust because of circumstances beyond their control.

Younger adults were the most likely to be pessimistic about their economic future, the survey of 100 self-employed van drivers revealed.

In addition, more than two-thirds of those questioned said that the previous Labour government had not done enough to help them through the financial crisis.

ITN.co.uk quotes Mike Bowman, of More Than Business, as saying: "The businessmen we surveyed are critical to the UK economy and to the everyday lives of the customers they serve.

"In turn, they are dependent on their vehicles and manageable running costs in order to practise their trade profitably. The fact that the vast majority are still concerned about their survival is a cause for concern."

The new government recently announced over £6 billion of cuts in an effort to reduce the national budget deficit and stabilise the economy following the recession.
