Van contract hirers warned of theft danger

Van contract hire customers have been advised to be particularly security conscious following a rise in van thefts.

The Association of Chief Police Officers Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (AVCIS) has said that van thefts, as well as equipment being stolen from vehicles, is becoming increasingly common.

"The rise in thefts of vans demonstrates their potential value in terms of spare parts, scrap metal and the prospect of stealing extra 'booty' within the contents of the van." said AVCIS head Detective Chief Inspector Mark Hooper.

"Often, these stolen vehicles are dismantled quickly, so our advice to vehicle owners is to ensure that their security is as tight as possible."

His comments came as AVCIS revealed the ten vehicles most targeted by thieves in 2009.

Top of the list for the second year running is the Ford Transit while Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is in seventh place.

It was recently reported that, according to British Car Auctions, used van prices have reached a record high.
