Van drivers in danger on the UK's 'high risk roads'

Around ten per cent of all Britain's motorways and A-roads present a 'high risk' to van leasing customers and other drivers, the findings of a new study suggest.
Research carried out by the Road Safety Foundation found that half of all the crashes that take place in the UK occur on just one-tenth of the national road network.
In particular, the study helped to pinpoint Scotland, the north-west of England, Yorkshire and the Humber region as posing the greatest risk for drivers, though the West Midlands has been named as the safest region.
Additionally, the newly-published report has also advised that British drivers are around seven times more at risk on major roads than on minor ones, while junctions continue to be accident blackspots.
Commenting on the findings, the foundation's director Joanne Hill called for local authorities to take a more-proactive approach to keeping road-users safe.
"There needs to be a mindshift that leads to action being taken before an accident happens," she said.
This comes in the same week that van leasing customers were advised of the risks posed by young drivers, with one in four of the under-24s polled by Brake admitting to have raced on a public road.
