Van drivers labelled rudest motorists

While most van contract hire customers may consider themselves to be amicable road users, a new survey has revealed that other motorists might not agree.

A poll by online firm VanInsurance found that drivers consider the 'White Van Man' to be the rudest on the roads, the Press Association reports.

Among the characteristics most identified as being annoying van driver traits were tailgating, cutting people up and pulling out in front of other motorists.

Furthermore, they were accused of often using bad language, gesticulating and showing a lack of courtesy.

They were followed by taxi drivers, young people, old people and lorry drivers on the rude driver list.

VanInsurance managing director Lee Grandin said: "Rude drivers are thoughtless and their bad behaviour contributes to unsafe driving conditions.

"At the very least, rude drivers cause frustration and anxiety and, at worst, may indirectly cause road rage or even road traffic collisions."

The Freight Transport Association recently unveiled the Van Excellent Code - a set of standards for van fleet drivers, including guidelines on acceptable driver behaviour.
