Van drivers love books and politics, survey reveals

Van contract hire drivers could among the most well-read and politically aware motorists in the UK, a new survey has suggested.

A poll by insurance group Aviva has dispelled the 'white van man' stereotype, revealing that van drivers to be among the most intellectual.

Over 70 per cent of van drivers said they were interested in politics, a higher percentage than any other group of drivers.

In addition, half said that they are frequently reading books, compared to just one in ten sports car owners.

They are also the most likely to have their own business and prefer documentaries and the news to reality TV programmes.

Nigel Bartram, motoring expert at Aviva, said: "It's great to prove what we already knew - van drivers are switched on and enterprising.

"Gone are the days of the traditional white van man stereotype. What our research shows is that van drivers are entrepreneurial and responsible."

The most popular vehicle among van drivers is the Ford Transit which, according to recent figures from Ford, now has a 36 per cent share of the market.
