Van drivers should take into account the likely cost of insuring a vehicle when choosing a model for van leasing, it has been claimed.
According to van insurance firm Swinton Commercial, measures such as selecting the smallest van possible for the type of work it will be used for and opting for one with good security features will help drive down the cost of insurance.
It follows a poll by the company that found the cost of insurance is the second most important factor to van drivers when choosing a new vehicle.
Of the 1,200 polled, 21 per cent said insurance premium is the top priority when selecting a new van, behind security on 27 per cent.
Phil Moss, commercial vehicle manager at Swinton said: "Vehicle security is quite right at the top of priorities for van drivers.
"By choosing the smallest van that is practical with additional security measures, van drivers can expect a significant reduction on their premiums."
This year saw Nissan pick up the prize for best van manufacturer at the Thatcham British Insurance Vehicle Security Awards 2010.
