Van leasing drivers could face extra taxes from EU

Van leasing drivers and other motorists could face a plethora of extra taxes as part of the EU's attempts to fight climate change.

A new report has recommended to the EU that "ambitious and aggressive policy measures" are needed to curb carbon emissions from vehicles.

The report, from consultancy AEA, suggests the use of road pricing, fuel tax increases and further vehicle emissions regulations are needed, as well as the promotion of electric vehicles, biofuels and energy efficiency improvements.

"Transport has one of the fastest growing greenhouse gas emissions trajectories by sector and there is now an urgent need for a long-term sustainable policy framework to curtail and reverse this trend," said Sujith Kollamthodi, practice leader for transport at AEA.

He added that no "silver bullet" for the problem existed.

"Only an ambitious combination of the available policy measures will enable us to achieve the significant emissions reductions needed in the transport sector," he said.

A recent poll by review site Parkers.co.uk found that 69 per cent of motorists would not consider buying an electric vehicle.
