Vauxhall to reveal electric Vivaro at motor show

Vauxhall is to reveal an electric version of its popular van contract hire model the Vivaro at the upcoming IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover, Germany.

Called the Vivaro e-Concept, the van comes with a range of 250 miles, Vauxhall have announced - an impressive distance for an electric vehicle.

It does this by using "range-extender technology" in the form of a small petrol engine that recharges the batteries.

The van is powered by 111 kWh lithium ion batteries capable of supplying 148bhp and 273lb-ft of torque.

This enables a range of over 60 miles using purely electric propulsion, before the range-extender kicks in for longer journeys.

Chris Lacey, executive director of international operations at Vauxhall Commercial Vehicles, said: "We are convinced that we will get a fantastic reaction from commercial vehicle specialists who use such vehicles on a daily basis.

"Electric mobility will allow them to travel in city areas which are now off-limits to petrol and diesel-powered vehicles and the range-extender technology makes it possible to use an electric van for normal routine business."

Earlier this week, it was announced that Renault and Vauxhall are to continue their commercial vehicle partnership in order to create a new generation of Master and Movano vans.
