The Mercedes-Benz Vito boasts all the clever features you'd expect from the German marque, but it's also a more-than-capable workhorse.

Introduced in the mid-90s using the body chassis of the Volkswagen Transporter, the Vito now looks dramatically different to its predecessor. While aesthetics aren't a major consideration for most van leasing customers, this light commercial vehicle is undoubtedly striking thanks to its streamlined body.

However, this van certainly isn't just a looker. All standard models - the Panel Van, Dualiner and Traveliner - come with an extensive range of features, such as cruise control and a limiter, a multifunctional steering wheel with built-in Bluetooth and a diesel particulate filter.

Optional extras include the COMAND APS satnav system, start-off assistance and the three-pointed star's PARKTRONIC parking and manoeuvring aid.

All of these innovations do not come at the expense of the Vito's performance as a hardworking vehicle, with the Panel Van offering a cargo volume of up to 7.4 m3 and enough space to fit three Euro pallets in line, depending on the vehicle length. It is also capable of transporting a maximum payload of 1,145 kg thanks to optional load uprating.

Mercedes-Benz insists the interior variability of the Vito Panel Van is tough to beat. The wide sliding doors open to a width and height of 985 mm x 1259 mm and forklift loading is possible at the side of the vehicle, while the standard roof model has a compartment height of 1.35 m.

This technical wizardry and adaptability has not been lost on Van Trader, which hailed the current generation of the Vito as a benchmark among vans.

Describing the commercial vehicle as "a star in terms of its improved payload and robust nature", the reviewer noted that it also offers substantially reduced noise levels on the road, coupled with simpler controls and handling thanks to its upgraded cockpit and enhanced suspension.

Van Trader pointed out that the Vito's carbon emissions and fuel consumption have been reduced by up to 15 per cent on its predecessors, due to the efficiency of its four and six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz engines, and the latest BlueEFFICIENCY technology.

Available as an optional extra, BlueEFFICIENCY comprises an eco-friendly start/stop system, special low-resistance tyres and on-demand activation of major assemblies.

The publication went on to praise the Vito's gear box, explaining: "The new six-speed transmission, standard in combination with all four-cylinder diesel engines, also helps reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

"Its broad gear ratio spread allows excellent traction at low speeds, while at higher speeds revs - and thus fuel consumption - are reduced."

VansA2Z was equally impressed with the Vito, hailing it as "really well built" and a "class act".

Beyond the technical specifications and load-carrying capabilities offered by the vehicle, the website pointed out the business advantages of running a Mercedes-Benz van.

"If you want to make a statement about your business and its aspirations, then opting for a van that bears the three-pointed star is not a bad way of doing it," the van news and reviews site explained.

VansA2Z said there are plenty of reasons to choose the Vito, although it highlighted one potential annoyance - the parking brake is foot operated and is released by pulling a lever on the dashboard.

This minor quibble aside, the reviewer was largely impressed, with particular praise reserved for the vehicle's handling.

It stated the van delivers a composed ride in the majority of conditions, taking some of the pain out of long stretches behind the wheel, while the quality of the shift on the manual gearbox was said to be up to the German automotive giant's usual high standard.

"All in all it's a van with few drawbacks," VansA2Z concluded.
