The Nissan Navara is targeted squarely at the mid-point of the pick-up truck market, somewhere between a no-frills workhorse and a comfortable 4x4.
Attractive commercial vehicle tax rates meant pick-ups became the company car of choice almost overnight, leading to them being decked out with fancy chrome finishes and luxury interior tweaks.
While the Navara is certainly an attractive vehicle to sit inside, it's not afraid to get its hands dirty on the construction site like a traditional pick-up.
In Acenta King Cab trim, the Navara offers a cargo area measuring 457 x 1,861 x 1,560 mm, while the Tekna Double Cab model comes with a slightly smaller storage volume of 457 x 1,511 x 1,560 mm.
This generous cargo space is coupled with a payload of 1,110 kg, which is similar to many panel vans.
The storage area is bolstered further by the addition of an optional lockable box in the rear of the pick-up.
Nissan decided to fit the Navara with solid rear suspension to prevent the springs from sagging when the load bay is packed full of heavy cargo.
Pick-up truck leasing customers may be surprised by the relatively low fuel consumption offered by the Navara, which stands at a combined 33.2 mpg, while it emits 224 g of carbon dioxide per km - 15 per cent cleaner than its predecessor.
It is also capable of accelerating from zero to 60 mph in 11.1 seconds and has a top speed of 112 mph.
The Navara also offers several options that drivers may not expect from the typical commercial vehicle, including a six multi-changer CD stereo - controlled via the steering column - plus ESP traction control, ABS, EBD and brake assist. While these may not be essentials for the average business, they're certainly nice to have and make the all-round driving experience that bit more comfortable.
But fancy extras aside, does the Nissan Navara fit the bill as a pick-up truck for everyday use in a commercial environment?
Evo magazine says that although it may not be the most obvious fleet vehicle at first glance, on closer inspection it's well worth considering.
While the straight line speed and ride quality were questioned, reviewer Roger Green pointed out that it is capable of towing a variety of vehicles and insisted it is also surprisingly fun to drive.
"Motorway cruising is comfortable, while a B-road dash can get very exciting in the wet, particularly around bumpy bends," he commented.
While the Nissan Navara comes with a variety of engine options, Auto Trader said the majority of motorists will plump for the 2.5 litre, four-cylinder turbo diesel, which is far more efficient than previous models.
The publication claimed the drive will surprise many motorists. Despite its tough rear suspension, separate chassis frame and its relative bulk, Auto Trader insisted the pick-up corners pretty tidily and holds its line in the bends, while the steering was described as "fluid and accurate".
Furthermore, the reviewer was pleased with the interior, commenting: "There's a fresh, nice-to-use centre console with upgraded hi-fi and satnav, the instrument cluster has been refreshed and elements like the door trims worked over too."
All of these factors combine to give the Navara a "VW-like classiness", Auto Trader declared.
Handing the vehicle a steady three stars out of five, What Car? said the Navara's key attributes are its composed handling and large load bay, as well as the tax benefits offered to commercial users.
The Double Cab was praised for its ability to carry five people in comfort, but the King Cab version was described as being quite cramped.
"While it's short of the abilities of the best 4x4s, it's one of the better pick-ups," What Car? added.
