Our Review of the Land Rover 90

The Land Rover range of vehicles are designed for touring over rugged off road terrain. There is simply no other class of commercial van that can plough into streams and up the sides of steep hills and rocky mountains like the Land Rover. They are tough, they are rugged, and they are reliable. The Land Rover 90 has all of these qualities in abundance.

The Land Rover 90 is in effect the same as the standard model except the rear and side windows have been panelled and the rear seats have been removed and replaced by a load bay. This classes the Land Rover 90 as a commercial vehicle.

The Land Rover 90 is a serious machine. Its refined 2.4 litre engine puts a 122bhp at a driver's disposal, and though this may not look exceptional on paper, the Land Rover 90 applies 360Nm of torque to shifting its 746Kg maximum payload from point A to point B. This no nonsense approach to shifting cargo across difficult, treacherous terrain is much appreciated by drivers that have to do it. The engine is also fitted with an anti - stall device, which is handy for rugged terrain which requires a very different driver skill set than the on road counterparts.

Like all Land Rovers, the Land Rover 90's fuel economy comes in at 22.6 miles per gallon. In that sense the Land Rover 90 is a bit of a trade off. Off road ruggedness, grit and determination against fuel economy.

To that end the business or driver that needs a Land Rover 90 must require to shift some fairly heavy and bulky equipment in places where the standard panel van fears to tread. In fact, if a pick - up is out of the question due the terrain, then only one vehicle is left to use, and that is the Land Rover 90.

To drive the Land Rover 90 is a little like coaxing an animal to do what you want. It is however, a vehicle that has to be driven due to its substantial bulk and sturdiness. There is a no frills design in the cab but everything is functional and strong. In many respects if it had an interior that looked like a family car it would, I imagine, make you feel you were somehow cheated out of your Land Rover 90 experience. The Land Rover 90 like all Land Rovers is no nonsense work horse, which for off road travel simply cannot be beaten.
