Peugeot Bipper Professional 'an excellent urban small van'
The compact yet spacious Peugeot Bipper Professional has clearly been designed with the city in mind, with its robustness and agility making it a strong choice for van leasing customers looking for a vehicle largely for urban use.
Its turning circle of 10.2 m is a real advantage when operating the van on confined inner-city roads, while its 15 mm ground clearance means it is able to handle well on a wide variety of terrain.
These and other features contributed to the Bipper Professional being named the city van of the year for 2011 at the Fleet Van Awards.
Despite its compact design, the van is capable of transporting a maximum payload of 660 kg including the driver, while its Multi-Flex seating system means it offers a load floor space of up to 2.5 m and a potential volume of 2.8 cubic metres.
Fleet Van was just one of the industry experts to be impressed by the Bipper Professional, which has picked up a string of positive reviews since its introduction to the UK market.
Syd Taylor of the Shropshire Star noted the wide range of features offered by the commercial vehicle, including air conditioning, powered windows and Bluetooth connectivity, all of which improve the all-round drive experience.
While some prospective customers may be concerned about the capacity of this compact van, the reviewer stressed that it can carry everything from bulky furniture and waste to musical equipment, lawn mowers and more.
Although it is available with a 1.4 litre petrol engine, Mr Taylor noted that the most popular models of the Bipper Professional are the 1.4 litre, 68 bhp diesel version and the 1.3 litre HDi Top-Start, which comes with 2-Tronic electronically controlled manual gears.
The 68 bhp engine may seem a little on the small side, but the writer stressed that it "pulls splendidly", adding: "It'll wizz along at speeds up to 95 mph but always remains economical."
"Responsive and light electro-hydraulic steering makes for easy work around town and there's a sense of well-planted security when thrashing the daylights out of it on the motorway - as many van drivers do, secure in the knowledge that Peugeot diesels are unburstable," he added.
Van Trader recommended the Bipper Professional to anyone looking for a small van with a single sliding side door, no windows on the back doors, a diesel engine, Bluetooth, a parking sensor and enough space to comfortably seat two people.
The magazine acknowledged that the sliding door is a little narrow but still described it as "very handy", while the vehicle's steel bulkhead was praised as a useful safety and security feature. The reviewer was also satisfied with its asymmetric rear doors, stating they are "a nice touch".
Parkers was equally impressed with the Bipper, handing the commercial vehicle a four-star review and praising its neat handling, "deceptively" large cargo area and very frugal diesel engine. The only negatives mentioned by the reviewer were the aesthetics - they were not keen on the budget interior finish - and the basic range of equipment.
"For cheap and cheerful small van ownership, it's ideal for those on a budget," Parkers commented.
While it insisted that the standard Bipper feels solid and "shouldn't let you down", the buyers' guide explained that van leasing customers looking to work the vehicle especially hard should opt for the Tough Pack specification, which includes upgraded 15-inch wheels, raised suspension, a washable cabin floor covering and extra body protection.
Due to its size, the Bipper Professional obviously isn't for everyone, but as small vans go its impressive cargo bay and low running costs make it an excellent option.
